I directed the Canadian AMATEUR premiere of “The Boys in the Photograph” at high school where I teach.
It was an extremely difficult and emotional show, and the kids NAILED it.
The rewrite is quite good— three new songs (“The Boys in the Photograph”, “Born In Belfast”— a fantastic rocker, and “It Will Never End”— a really dour, dark, song for the final confrontation between John and Thomas). The cut songs weren’t missed, really— “Our Kind of Love” and “To Have and To Hold” (the wedding song, beautiful but not entirely necessary).
The show is beautiful and powerful. And I love *most* of Ben Elton’s lyrics. :) |
