| Carol Channing identified as White, and kept her heritage hidden for many years, so I doubt she's part of the Black legacy they're looking to honor. | |

| Yes, Carol Channing was "in the closet" regarding her heritage for many years, something like a real-life Julie from "Show Boat" but with a much more successful career. Perhaps that's another reason so many gays especially loved her. At any rate, she did "come out" eventually, and I would hope that many POCs would be happy to have her. Can you read people's minds who "they're looking to honor"? The heritage of hiding one's race for employment/nondiscrimination purposes is also part of that heritage---fortunately, one that has changed, and Carol was a huge star at any rate. She gave so much of herself to the theater. | |

| Nah, how about renaming The Majestic, which has no significance to anything Broadway, to The Andrew Lloyd Webber. No one has put more asses in seats, employed more performers, and musicians and kept more front of house employed in theaters worldwide. | |

| ALW owns 7 theatres in the West End. Let one of them be renamed for him—if you must—but certainly not a Broadway stage in preference to a person of color who has contributed to the American theatre scene. | |

| Smell you. So he owns theaters too, all the more reason to acknowledge and honor his accomplishments. If pencil pushers in the Shubert offices who never put one ass in a seat can get a marquee, so can the most successful person in modern theater. | |

| Thank you for offering names of people who have had long careers in which they were openly and proudly Black. Any of these would be excellent choices. To see the first two names offered on this board in response to the goal of naming theater for Black artists being a woman who passed for white and a man who is white... is disappointing to say the least. Though I do appreciate all the names offered further down this thread. |

| Thanks. I also listed Paul Robeson in my initial post in this thread. I've also suggested a lot of other names as well further down. But the person who criticizes me knows that doesn't fit his agenda. I usually actively try to avoid reading his messages, but sometimes don't look where I click. But -- so many other people to hear from and to read. As Ethel Mertz said years ago, "I have sufficient". | |

| I wrote in my message that I appreciated the list of names that were offered further in the thread. I didn’t say your list specifically, but that list was included in my comment. I do apologize that I missed your other offerings in your first post, I was reacting strongly to your headline and that blinded me a bit. There’s no agenda, though, just frustration that Carol Channing and ALW were among the early offerings in a thread about honoring Black contributions to the theater. |

| Whoa, am I the only person who never knew that Carol Channing was part African American. I certainly don't think the vast majority of theatre goers around the world know this. I guess naming a theatre after her because it was to name it for someone who was Black would change that. And that would be a good thing. But I must say my vote would go to the most honored, versatile, accomplished black theatre person in history would be Audra. I see no reason to only honor people in this way once they are dead. | |

| Isn’t Helen Hayes the only performer to have a theatre named after her? What does that say about the diversity of management and labor, for instance? Do we want to see that change? Where’s the Mary Martin, Jason Robards, James Earl Jones, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, Merman, the Helen Gallagher, the Gwen Verdon, the Elizabeth Ashley. And...for directors, who are also hirelings....the Lloyd Richards? It’s all such a matter of current times and politics and even fashion right now. Anything goes. But I wonder if there ever was a protocol. Did someone say at one time that there should be theatres named after critics? I like the Eugene O’Neill. That one seems appropriate to his significance. The protocol seems to have to do with a certain size in relation to American theatre. Hence the August Wilson and even the critics of longevity. |

| Edwin Booth, Ethel Barrymore, and Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne still have theatres. In older days, there was the Garrick, the Maxine Elliott, Jolson’s 59th, Molly Picon’s, the Nora Bayes, and George M. Cohan—though some of these were not merely honorary, but because the actor was owner and producer, as well as performer. Laura |

| And the original Helen Hayes Theatre was demolished in 1982 while Miss Hayes was still with us. The demolishing of HHT and the Morosco should go down as one of the crimes of the last century. |
