| A travesty in retrospect. Alfred Hitchcock's masterwork VERTIGO should have won Picture, Director, Actor, Cinematography, and Score that year. But for some reason it took years for it to be recognized for its brilliance. And I think it could make a wonderful musical. | |

| It already is a musical as far as I'm concerned. As great as Vertigo is (and I agree with the Sight and Sound critics poll that it's the GOAT of movies), the greatest thing about it is the miraculous Herrmann score. | |

| The key phrase is "in retrospect." At the time, VERTIGO got mixed reviews (worse in Europe); it did somewhat better than breaking even, but not a lot; audiences were disappointed that it was so different from the Hitchcock thrillers they had loved in the past. | |

| But...still....as a fresh thing with that glorious Loewe score, the wit of Jourdain’s « Gigi », and the frissons of Leslie Caron’s beauty, Gingold’s ebullience, Lerner’s intelligence, Chevalier himself, and the aesthetuc of Minnelli.....I think perhaps we take all that too much for granted. It may be not equal to « Vertigo », but they are so very different. | |

| And--as I'm sure you know--the film was not even nominated for an Oscar in any of these 5 categories. Only nominations were for sound and art direction. | |
