I saw ''Love Me Tonight'' years ago, but I rewatched it this evening on TCM to refresh my memory. I admired Rouben Mamoulian's cinematic staging of the musical numbers and Rodgers and Hart's timeless tunes, like ''Isn't It Romantic'' (even with the cringeworthy lyric: ''While I sit around, my love can scrub the floor. She'll kiss me ev'ry hour or she'll get the sack''). That said, I can't say that it would make my top 10 list of movie musicals.

Two things that struck me as odd: One, ''Love Me Tonight'' is set in Paris and everyone sings about being in ''Paree.'' But Maurice Chevalier is the ONLY person in the entire film who speaks or croons with a French accent. Two, was ''Mimi'' a Rodgers & Hart hit shoehorned into ''Love Me Tonight''? Chevalier sings ''Mimi'' to Jeanette MacDonald, playing Princess Jeanette, who points out that her name ISN'T Mimi. Later, other characters sing about ''Mimi,'' even tho' there is no such character in the picture. At least in ''Gigi,'' Louis Jourdan sings about an actual girl who's in the movie. ;)
