It's more a sense of the film's playfulness that I think makes the "Mimi" number so charming to me. Maybe with your journalistic background, you prefer to see facts, which is certainly valid, too. But I think they were going for whimsy there and also "Mimi" does end up infuriating McDonald's character, which is part of the fun, since when he sees that she is at the chateau, he decides to stay and try to win her.

I did say I also found some of Chevalier's words a bit hard to understand; his English diction became better in later films.
