Liza with a Z dancers

Just watched it again for the first time in about 40 years and WOWEE she and the dancers were even more fantastic that I remembered. But I am shocked that I can't find the list of those dancers anywhere on the internet, not even during the credits. Good heavens, on IMBD they list some people in the audience like Tony Bennett, Gwen Verdon, Lorna Luft, etc. In that bunch of names is does say that Ann Reinking was one of the dancers, but I couldn't spot her. But really no list of those incredible, flawless dancers? One of the true blessings of my life was spending a week in Paris in 1991 when she was appearing for six sold-out weeks with Charles Aznavour at the Palais des congrès de Paris 3,723 seats. I went with my buddy Jim Caruso and at the opening night party at the Moulin Rouge, Jim and I sat with Liza and Charles and Billy Stritch (her pianist of course) along with The Baron and Baroness de Rothschild, Yul Brynner's widow, and Pierre Billon, son of Patachou. What a night.

Sam Wasson's biography, Fosse, devotes much of one chapter to this tv special and a lot of material comes from the dancers, who are often mentioned by name. If you're a Fosse fan, you need this book.

Candy Brown was one. I have a DVD with commentary by Liza. I remember her pointing Candy out.

(she was in Pippin commercial and was sort of the basis for the Richie character in A Chorus Line until she quit the workshops to do Chicago)

After seeing the show earlier this month, I did a pretty exhaustive search on the dancing ensemble. In addition to Candy Brown, Loretta Abbott and Jimmy Roddy, I found that Spencer Henderson and Neil Jones were the men with Liza in "I Gotcha." The two were also the only dancers from the special that joined Minnelli on a pared-down version of the show on tour.

Both Henderson and Roddy succumbed to AIDS in the 80s and 90s, and Jones passed away in 2019 at 78. Loretta Abbott died in 2016 at 83.

Louise Quick assisted Fosse on the special, but not sure if she performed, as it was hard to make out individual faces. The rest are a mystery to me.

Ah, the passing of time. Kind of shocking to imagine that one of those dancers could have been 83 five years ago.
