| For years I have not gone to see Wicked and this concert has cemented my decision to stay away ! I find most of the score trite. I have seen Pippin innumerable times and love that score: so happy they did release that dvd to forever attest to wonderful staging and great Ben Vereen I did like a few performers in the concert especially Alex Newell (the use of 4 pianos was terrific) and Amber Riley. I know that Wicked is adored by many but I am not one |

| I think Wicked is a modern masterwork about censorship and perception of evil; and manipulation of publicity, for good and for evil. I do think Schwartz is a master in the field - and doing what the great authors of musicals have done for generations: he uses popular musical forms to make dramatic statements on themes important to our society. He is as gifted as a lyricist as the greatest of greats - able to make jokes but also shape the deepest and most authentic of feelings, some simple, some complex. The "dialysis"/"pal-a-sis(ter)" rhyme is a case in point showing his mastery. He successfully moved pop music into Broadway settings while retaining precision of thought, rhyme and character. Having said all this, I am glad the crowd interrupted Glinda in the opening number before she used the subjective personal pronoun ("I") instead of the correct objective form "me": "Isn't it nice to know The good will conquer evil, The truth we all believe'll By and by Outlive the lie For you and -" (ME!) (Objective case governed by the preposition "For"!) But, as I say, he stopped just in time! |

| Was waiting for the stars of the concert to sing. Very dissapointed! Tuned out after the first commercial. Wicked is not what I think as the best I have ever seen. Sorry. My opinion. | |

| Do you mean Idina and Kristin by “stars of the concert”? Because in all the ads, promos, and even at the start of the show, they are identified as the hosts of the event, not performers. Though they do sing at the end—footage from a concert five years ago, as mentioned elsewhere on this thread. Laura |

| He writes catchy tunes and knows what the people like, but none of those lyrics are good. At his best, he’s written some fine poetry, but nothing to put him among the greatest of the greats. | |

| Expected so much more and glad I caught it on DVR. Those PBS breaks for funds ruin the flow. Once was enough and at end I hit delete and I've seen Wicked over eight times. In New York. London, San Francisco and Los Angeles, all productions were in top form. I'm sure I see it again in time. It should have won the Best Musical Tony. |

| Wicked is by the book musical adaptation of a popular book. That isn’t easy to do and it was done well. But ave q is very unique piece of original theater. I personally find more emotional pull in ave q than wicked. | |

| A faithful adaptation of the novel would have been extremely unlikely to become a popular hit on stage. It certainly would not have attracted the family audience that has given the stage version such legs. It's much darker and G(a)linda is very much a supporting character who disappears for long stretches. I don't think the novel's structure would have transferred to the stage successfully at all. Holzman used the novel as a jumping-off point and created something aimed at the popular theater. Whether that's good, bad, or indifferent is a matter of personal taste. (I love both the novel and the musical -- even though I can count a dozen weaknesses in the latter. Sometimes the core of something just works so well on its own terms that flaws are easy to forgive.) |

| Holzman's work is akin to what Hollywood studios would often do with successful musicals...use the title and some character names to tell a whole new story that really doesn't have much at all in common with the source material. Clearly, whomever had the idea to option the novel for the stage, that person really only wanted the title and the story's relationship with THE WIZARD OF OZ. The thing that annoyed me about doing that was that they decided to co-opt an ending that Gregory Maguire very specifically considers in the novel and then rejects. And that destroys the whole point, which is that there will be no happy ending for the "wicked" character. Gregory Maguire, of course, is crying all the way to the bank about what was done to his story. :) Maguire's OZ books would be great candidates for adaptation into a fantasy television series for a cable channel or streaming service that had the budget to do some serious world-building on the scale of GAME OF THRONES. The first part of the story, told in the novel WICKED, is also so different from the story told on stage, that it likely wouldn't compete. It would be a whole different thing...a horse of another color, if you will. The one problem I see is that I can't imagine such a series using the title WICKED, which would definitely carry associations to the musical. They'd have to come up with a new title and still make it clear what the thing is. |
