| I'm sure someone will say this post is racist, and the whole thread will go off the rails, and messages (probably including this one) will be pruned or deleted. That disclaimer having been made, the first 2 of the 3 shows that Manhattan Theatre Club has slated for this season in their Broadway house, "Lackawanna Blues" and "Skeleton Crew", are largely if not entirely written, staged and performed by Black authors, directors and performers. (The 3rd is the long-delayed revival of "How I Learned to Drive" with Mary-Louise Parker and David Morse, but that doesn't open until March.) As of Sept. 1st, while New York State is hovering at around 70% of white residents having had at least one vaccine dose - that number drops down to 13% among African-Americans. This season was obviously scheduled last spring, before anyone knew what the vaccine rollout would look like, where the numbers would be come fall, and what the breakdown would be of vaccine skeptics and vaccine-hesitant; but the only logical conclusion one can draw is that MTC is worried that their walkup, last-minute and crossover numbers among non-white audiences - the kind of people who aren't season subscribers but presumably came out to see such plays as Choir Boy and Jitney in decent numbers - simply wouldn't be there if they sided with the Broadway League and required vaccinations for all attendees. (Naturally, my only question would be, regardless of what the demographic makeup of audiences might hypothetically be, how the audience as a whole, in particular their season subscribers who tend to be older, will feel about this policy.... I can guarantee my parents, anxious even about attending indoor theater with vaccinated audiences, won't be going to MTC as long as this policy is in effect, and I admit it definitely makes me slightly more apprehensive as well). If anyone else has another theory I'd love to hear it... particularly since their off-Broadway space, scheduled to present 3 plays about white characters and with predominantly white casts, WILL require full vaccination. |
