| YOU GOTTA HAVE A GIMMICK CONCERT INSPIRED BY THE MARCH WILL FEATURE THE TALENT OF TRANS PERFORMERS NEW YORK CITY - Sis, an actress and activist in the theatre community, is calling attention to the erasure of trans bodies within the theatre and entertainment industries with the Trans March on Broadway on Monday, September 6, 2021 at 12pm, location to be announced that morning. Guest speakers will be announced on social via @ucancallmesis. The lineup is subject to change. Organizer Sis said, "After the recent discriminatory statements of Cameron Mackintosh in regards to trans folk in musical theater, it makes me wonder 'when are we going to have an actual conversation led by us?' I know he's not the only one. Join me Monday. It's time to come together as a community and center trans bodies where they have been erased. With this march, my hope is to start the conversation so that we can better navigate gender identity within the entertainment industry. This is an announcement that we are here. You cannot erase us from the narrative that we are part of." Inspired by the march, You Gotta Have a Gimmick is a concert showcasing the TALENT that trans people bring to the table. Gender identity is not a gimmick, but as with any performer it is the ACT that is special. More information about You Gotta Have a Gimmick will come at a later time. If you are interested in producing the concert, DM @ucancallmesis. #TransMarchOnBroadway |

| I wonder what genius decided to hold this on Labor Day Monday -- when those few Broadway people who are back to working full-time in their offices will have the day off? Who exactly are they protesting to? | |

| Had a similar thought about the scheduling of the Deaf West Into the Woods - a group you'd think would have inclusion on their minds - on Yom Kippur. | |

| Into the Woods is produced by Deaf Broadway (their website says this is their inaugural live performance), not Deaf West. | |

| Thanks - I misremembered that. Had seen a few great DeafWest programs in NY and probably just assumed it was them. | |

| First - this is a truly needed conversation on a undeniably valid issue. But I have to wonder how many of the people who have commented on Mackintosh actually went back to the Telegraph article itself as opposed to relying on the stories about the Telegraph article. I have to admit I did until I read Mackintosh's statement and wanted to see the entire original article (or ideally a transcript of what was said) as opposed to the characterizations of it in other outlets. After reading it, it appears his statement seemed a far more likely interpretation than what I saw portrayed in other articles. Some of the articles I read truly framed his quotes in a way just completely inconsistent with other parts of the article. When I read the Telegraph article it seems crystal clear he was talking about whether the "character" of Mary Poppins could be transgender as opposed to a transgender actor playing the character (which is nearly universally how his statement was covered in other articles). Other statements he was quoted as saying in the same interview were explicit in his openness to have any characters played by an actor of any color or identity if they're the best actor for the part. I never saw that quote - which was much less ambiguous as to his feelings on casting - quoted in a single article I read. I think the "taken out of context" excuse is often bullshit. Here - after reading the original article, he has a valid point. Now - of course you can still debate whether his objection to making the character of Mary Poppins transgender is a form of discrimination. That's fine. But the vast majority of commentary I've read on this doesn't focus on this but simply asserts his objection was to trans actors which puts words into his mouth that never appeared in the Telegraph article. Using that article to claim he thinks casting a transgender actor is gimmick requires a big stretch beyond his words while ignoring all the words he did say that don't support that interpretation. Holding someone accountable is fine - but do it for what someone does without exaggeration. It undermines everything and will make people skeptical of further claims of discrimination. To be clear - this is not to say that transgender discrimination is not a real issue in theater - as well as everywhere else - but a lot of the Macintosh coverage seems disingenuous. And one additional point - for anyone who simply read someone else's characterization of the article and never bothered to go back and read the original - is that not what we've just spend the last 4+ years yelling about - how so many people just take everything they read on the internet at face value without ever doing any sort of fact check? |

| I absolutely agree and that was my interpretation of the Telegraph article as well. All of the things being said about him were surprising to me because his shows in London (Les Miserables, especially) were always cast with people of varying ethnicities. And I don't remember those being considered "gimmicky" |
