Funny I was in Brigadoon once. I don't remember My Mother's Wedding Day at all.

Is it often cut or was I just offstage during that number!

Thanks for the great list.

Though "The Barber and His Wife" is correct, don't we get more of the back-story in Sweeney from "Poor Thing"?

I would actually argue that "The Barber And His Wife" isn't really a song - or certainly a very unfinished one if anything. More of a fragment that becomes one of the musical/textual themes in the show.

Indeed, "Poor Thing" (with its intro which is a repeat of the "Barber/Wife" theme) seems more like a true complete story song.

I agree. No doubt Laura just forgot "Poor Thing," but it seemed odd to me that somebody could remember "The Barber and His Wife" from the same show and forget "Poor Thing"!

I meant “Poor Thing.” What can I say? It was late, and I was trying to come up with story songs. As, er, Judge Turpin says, “Mea culpa.”

Laura, who clearly should be more careful when posting before bed

It's what I figured, Laura! No apologies necessary. As I said, "The Barber and His Wife" wasn't wrong.

Looking over the song list from Sweeney I never realized how few solos he gets. Mrs. Lovett gets four. She's clearly the lead of the show I guess. (sort of) I wonder if it was written that way since they had a big star as Nellie.

“Meadowlark” THE BAKER’S WIFE

Which is actually a story within a story. Brilliant song.

Definitely concur about Closer than Ever, especially, quite literally, “Life Story.” I learned every word on road trips, singing along with Lynne Wintersteller, the OCR blasting on my cassette deck. Was happy to see she’s still attending the tale.

Any number of songs by JRB, who like a lot of contemporary writers, seem to be drawn to narrative song forms quite a bit.
