| I know that stage is big but why enlarge the cast??? Less actors means less risk! | |

| It was indeed a huge cast. A friend of a cast member told me all the protocols were followed – but I don't know what they were, or what the circumstances may have been. Of course the same thing could happen on Broadway at the drop of a hat; hopefully not... It's curious that the MUNY's CHICAGO featured a male actor performing the role of Velma Kelly, and a female performing the role of Mary Sunshine. |

| Was that done on purpose? I thought I read that the guy stepped in since he was the only one who could do it after the original Velma left or something. After the Cameron MacIntosh thing it makes me wonder how you go forward with casting nowadays. Mary Sunshine should just be a woman. That whole bit seems so dated and unshocking nowadays. Did the man playing Velma try to act like a woman or was he just himself? Whole new world we've entered into. |

| You can get a sense in the clips (link below.) From my perspective (gay man), I would not view his character as a biological woman in this production. I think it is very open to interpretation though depending on the audience member. On a related note, I loved seeing costumes that are not the Broadway revival black that we have come to expect. It gives the production a freshness that appeals to me. |

| This already has happened on Broadway. Someone testing positive, I mean. Per the New York Times' reporting on the re-openings of Waitress and Hadestown: "Even on this first night, there was a reminder of the challenges involved: An actress in 'Waitress,' who had been fully vaccinated, tested positive for the coronavirus, and couldn’t perform. The rest of the cast was tested, the actress who tested positive was replaced by an understudy, and the show went on." |

| No set of protocols is perfect but there is a big difference in several respects between Broadway and The Muny. First and foremost, none of these casts and crews are in a bubble, and what's "out there" in St Louis is dramatically riskier than on Broadway. Aside from the vax rate differential, I am assuming that the level of mask compliance (and culture) is far less. Secondly, I am also assuming that the understudy/standby situation is weaker. So while the same thing could certainly happen to a Broadway show, I don't think the hat would drop as quickly. | |

| Are Broadway shows planning to keep casts and crews in a bubble? I hadn't heard that. | |

| No, and I think if you look again, I did not suggest that. I confess I could have written more clearly, "none of these casts and crews [at either location]" ... I guess I was not clear enough in the part that S/F responded to either. I did not intend to understate the risk of spread but to compare the risk in the two places. I don't think it is controversial to say that the data shows that vaccination reduces risk of both infection and, a fortiori, spread, and the relative numbers in Saint Louis County and New York County bear that out. What I was trying to emphasize (and apparently was unsuccessful) was the relative risk, but I thought I had been reasonably clear that "the same thing could certainly happen to a Broadway show." And I am guessing (someone correct me if I am wrong) that mask compliance is lower and other protocols (e.g., vaccine requirement for theatre, indoor dining, gyms, etc.) are also lower or non-existent. I am not at all trying to suggest complacency in NYC, but simply to explain that the data makes it a lower risk place to invest huge sums of money in making theatre. |

| As someone who teaches at a liberal arts college in New York City where Covid is running rampant even though the school claims to have an 80% vaccination rate among its students, I think ryhog is underestimating how easily it is for these flare ups to happen. | |

| I agree with you. I think it is far easier to catch than people may realize. I've spoken about that before on this board as a vaccinated person who tested positive. | |

| Fauci on occasion has mention this occurrence, but does not repeat it every day -- vaccinated people who get a little sick (they assume it's just a cold or a mild case of the flu) do not always seek to have a covid test performed. They just ride it out until they get better. Unfortunately that means that there is no definitive way to know how many breakout cases are really happening and thus spreading to other unvaccinated individuals. |
