What an oddly defensive reaction. The off-Broadway production did not do a particularly good job of adapting Rostand's text... and it's the exact same adapter (Erica Schmidt, Dinklage's wife) for the film. The songs, which were so generic in terms of connection to the characters that they could easily have been switched around to other characters without missing a beat, is still being done by the Dessners for the film. The performances were solid—I would happily have seen the same cast in a straight production of Rostand's play—but the vehicle was weak.

I certainly hope the film is an improvement... but the fact that they seem to be going down the path of replicating the weakest elements does not inspire confidence.

"So what? They're not filming the live stage production" is a banal critique that could apply to any adaptation into another medium. Will you similar caution those considering upcoming version of West Side Story, Dear Evan Hanson, etc. that their feelings about the staged versions are totally irrelevant?
