I was fortunate to see Sher's performance in Torch Song in London. A brilliant take on Arnold, in some ways 180 from Fierstein's, so daring -- more eccentric and vulnerable -- that made the final third even more powerful: you saw this struggling, unfinished human being become an adult man, personally and morally heroic. I remember the group I was with all in tears when he stood up to his mother. At the time, it made me respect Torch Song all the more; the material suddenly seemed to have more flexibility than some said, viewing it as a vehicle for Harvey. Sher was astonishingly effective, and I went in a skeptic. A wonderful actor. May he be surrounded by white light.
