The run Antony Sher had in the '80s was incredible.

He went from one success to another: The Fool opposite Michael Gambon's Lear, Tartuffe, Richard III, Torch Song, Red Noses, Goosepimples. I wish I'd seen these performances. I got to see his Arturo Ui, Scottish King, Leontes and, most memorably, Tamburlaine the Great at Stratford. And also Stanley and Broken Glass and The Captain of Köpenick and recently in the Pinter short plays at the Pinter.

His book The Year of the King had a profound impact on me as a student actor and he epitomised for me what it meant to be a character actor. And his out and proud identity as a gay man was also inspiring to me as a young gay man.

I'm very sorry to hear about his illness and send my sincerest wishes to him & to Mr. Doran.
