Seconding that, based on watching it live in 2017.
I had first seen “Follies” at the Paper Mill in 1998, and I thought that the reason the Loveland sequence fell flat was because that production took an intermission and killed the momentum… and then seeing it in one sitting made me realize the intermission wasn’t the problem. Perhaps Loveland worked when Prince directed it, but as a piece of writing, it doesn’t bring anything new the show, just rehashing the same issues that these characters already sang about earlier in the show. It’s a fairly anticlimactic ending to a powerful evening of theater.
Still, that was a stunning production that used the Olivier space to great effect.
