I'll take the opposing view.  He was helping raise money for the Met's Costume Institute.

The Costume Institute gets no funding from the Met. They have to raise their entire budget.  The Gala is the primary source - -  $18 million in years past.  I would guess many on this board are fans of their stunning costume exhibitions.  And, plenty of theatre artists talk about going to the Met for inspiration.  

Tickets are $35K per person.  Jordan paid, or someone paid for him to attend  Anna Wintour decides who is invited.  You don't just call the development office.  Anna probably invites him because he'll come in a splashy outfit, and can afford a ticket or a table.

I'd suggest we praise him for supporting the visual arts.  Feels like leadership to me.
