Thanks for sharing that. This gets to the crux of where I feel that Roth is getting undue criticism.
There is a good conversation to be had around the way that Roth and his class of people use and flaunt their wealth, and the ways that this wealth has been built up through various schemes that are continuing to increase the wealth divide and make New York and other major cities unaffordable and unlivable. But a lot of the reaction to Roth specifically seems driven by trans- and genderqueer-phobia, with the anger being some version of "how dare he wear a dress and look pretty?"
It's very sad to see Larry Kramer embodying this point of view.
