Great analysis by Marlo Manners. I’ve taught this play to high schoolers for years, and I’ve never thought much about ages … I guess I always assumed that Amanda was in her 50s and the kids in their 20s. But I never thought about how old Tom was as he was narrating this and looking back. I also think Amanda has generally been cast too old. Yet, I loved Jessica Tandy’s and Shirley Booth’s Amandas as much as I liked Jessica Lange’s. (I found Cherry Jones strident — though I liked the production very much. Woodward didn’t make much of an impression on me. Hepburn was not good at all. And I was surprised at how much I respected Gertrude Lawrence’s effort, working very hard in a role that did not come naturally to her.)
