|It depends on the season and a lot of other factors. Every year is different. For example, in the 2018-19 season there were 12 musicals (not counting the non-profits). All were book musicals and only 1 recouped, Hadestown so far.
In the 2019-20 season I count 8 musicals. Two recouped, Freestyle Love Supreme, American Utopia, both specialty shows. 4 are still running.
It's pretty tough for an expensive book musical to recoup, unless it's a small show and wins the Best Musical Tony (Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, The Band's Visit, Hadestown). It took Mean Girls 1 year and 9 months to recoup despite virtually selling out for that entire time period. I think the future is very clouded and unpredictable.
I agree that Paulson is very effective as Linda Tripp, who is such a despicable, vile, slovenly, gossipy, incompetent individual. How did she keep her job all those years?
I think Beanie is also quite good -- in a role yet that has some similarities to that of Fanny Brice's early life. She was infatuated with Nick Arnstein, who was a suave womanizer and something of a con artist.
I loved Feldstein in Hello, Dolly! and she was funny in Booksmart. Funny Girl is a long shot, but has an excellent score. Beanie is an interesting choice to play Fanny. I will definitely see it when it opens on Broadway.
