Were the general audiences of the original production of FOLLIES expecting something totally different?

I haven't read too many thoughts on what the average audiences coming to see FOLLIES were expecting. Did they buy tickets thinking they would see an extravagant review like Ziegfeld would have produced? Were there walkouts during the show? (As brilliant as the number was, I've always had this sneaking feeling that the "Who's that Woman" got a big hand because the audience was finally seeing something more in line with what they had hoped for.)

Maybe I'm just having a cynical day.
