Palmer was certainly well cast as Abner. One of the all time great Broadway cast recordings. The expanded release on CD was one of the most complete of its era. Palmer was great in the film version also, very faithful for its time, although I missed Edie Adams and the songs that were cut.

Years later Palmer had a nice role in the ground breaking (at the time) TV series Brothers about 3 brothers and what happens when the two older guys (Lou and Joe) discover than the youngest brother (Cliff) is gay. It debuted in 1984 and ran for 5 years. I watched every episode and loved the show.

In a season 1 episode, Palmer played a Russian athlete (I believe) who was Cliff's new boyfriend. Lou and Joe had finally come to terms with their brother's sexuality but were upset when he began dating Palmer, who had this great physique and towered over Paul Regina's Cliff. Lou and Joe were (amusingly) worried that others would perceive Palmer as being the top and their brother as being a bottom. Anyway, it was a single episode romance but I remember Palmer as being quite funny and believable.
