The Burns-Mantle '71-72 volume called it the best musical of the season (over Two Gentlemen of Verona) and selected it as one of the 10 best plays of the season. The '72-73 volume listed it as a commercial failure. Ain't Supposed was nominated for 7 Tonys, including Best Musical, but didn't win any. However, it did receive 1 Theatre World and 3 Drama Desk Awards.
During Ain't Supposed's 325 performance run, there were 2 other black musicals on Broadway, The Me Nobody Knows and Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope, both of which had long runs and were commercial hits.
Neither Steven Suskin's More Opening Nights on Broadway nor Stanley Green's Broadway Musicals, Show By Show has a listing for Ain't Supposed. |
