I don't think anyone's saying it's either "right" or "wrong", only that it's "odd" or "unusual" for a review in the New York Times, which is a bit different than from a critic for the Des Moines Register.

Bosely Crowther of the Times again, in his 1958 review of the film of South Pacific: "And what it lacks in the more subtle values the show had upon the stage is balanced by frank spectacular features that will probably fascinate folks who go to films."

And the same critic in his 1961 review of WSS: "In every respect, the recreation of the Arthur Laurents-Leonard Bernstein musical in the dynamic forms of motion pictures is superbly and appropriately achieved."

And Vincent Canby, who reviewed the film of "A Chorus Line" in 1985, clearly saw the show on stage as well.

So to me it's "odd".
