The main point I wanted to make was that those that know and love the show, having accepted the characters and their faults, etc, may not be inclined to be so tough on the film, at least for the way it presents its plot. For those who don't know the material yet, I wonder if they may be more turned off to that same aspect, as this reviewer was.

My response to the stage show is largely the same. I really don't find Evan, or most of the characters, sympathetic enough, and although I like some of the score, I'm not a huge fan of it in total. So I also tend to think I will not enjoy the film all that much. But I think I would have the same reaction to the film if I didn't know the stage show. If I *did* love the stage show, I imagine I'd be more open minded about the film going in.
