I think the reactions to the film are a little more complicated. Yes, there is no question that people who accepted the play on its own terms are likely to extend a lot of that to the film. I also think that those who love/like musicals tend to be more forgiving sometimes, and people who love/like theatre tend to be more open to being challenged in a meta way. Further, I think the more natural film audience for musicals is not going to be especially interested in something that goes where DEH goes, whereas the more intellectually oriented audiences are probably less inclined toward musicals in the first place. All of these are of course generalizations. Finally, I don't know anything about this reviewer, but if she was around pre-pandemic and didn't see DEH, that probably tells something about where she might fall on the love/hate musicals continuum.
