I'll probably see this show in November. The trailer reminds be a little of Dessa Rose and the music in it apparently is Howland's original. No mention (in the trailer anyway) of Foster songs. The story has echoes of an earlier musical Maggie Flynn, which (I believe) did not address the racial issues inherent in the period and locale in any substantive way. However, it did allow Shirley Jones, Jack Cassidy, and a very young Stephanie Mills to perform some fine songs on stage. Also in the cast were Irene Cara and Giancarlo Esposito. I still listen to the OBC CD although I've never seen a stage production.
Some months ago I read that Foster's "Camptown Races" would be part of the Paradise Square score but minus the lyrics Doo-dah! Doo-dah! Oh, doo-dah day! |
