| Yahoo news is comparing it to the Cats box office. Friday DEH had a screen average of just $972, which suggests the decision to open it wide in 3000+ American cinemas was ambitious. I'm curious how the film was tested -- all films are -- pre-Toronto, and what the results were. If there's an unprecedented disconnect between film critics responses' and audiences (see Greatest Showman, though it built slowly and had Jackman to help give it legs), won't that be measured this weekend? If the film had opened on under 1000 screens, platformed around cities, going wide later, would it have made a difference? Unlikely. Yesterday, it was playing almost hourly in the small just-refurbished cineplex outside NYC. And no one was there. I decided not to buy seats in advance because literally none were sold on line. We walked in as the trailers were showing; a group of 4 sat in one row, a group of 3 in another. Arguably, nice weather on a September Saturday might be a factor. But not a nine-in-the-audience factor. This is one of the most unusual developments for material that seemed close to a sure thing, at least to a point. One shocking revelation: the younger audience -- seemingly a target -- is staying away in droves. Today final numbers may not be as unsettling as Cats', which cost a fortune to make. DEH was made for $28 million. Not a shoestring. When marketing, etc. is added, this may still be a costly misfire. One can imagine a harder global sell outside the UK. |
