CBS has made its ambivalence about the Tonys plain: they like it because it attracts high-end advertisers, but hate it because it attracts low ratings. They wish it were more performances and fewer awards. They wish there were some way they could pretend straight plays didn't exist at all. So we increasingly get shorter broadcasts that pay lip service to many of the actual nominees.
Obviously, asking people to pony up extra money to watch the whole broadcast sucks. But on the up side: a 4-hour Tony Awards! It's not the worst scenario I can imagine, which is not carrying the first 2-hours at all, anywhere. |
