| It sounds like you think that this is the Tonys folks' preferred solution, but, despite their attempt to put a good face on it, I don't think that is true. The ratings for awards shows have been lousy for the past year, and I doubt CBS was willing to put it on for three hours. Les Moonves was the biggest advocate for the Tonys at CBS, and he is gone. CBS is part of a corporation, and they view the Tonys as a way of getting some eyeballs onto their streaming service. Frankly, I hope it works to some extent, or we may be looking at a two-hour ceremony from now on. We are getting four hours of Tonys this year, rather than three. It will be great to see all the awards speeches as they happen. I have never before signed up for a streaming service with the intent of canceling a week later, but I have no problem with doing that here. And who knows? Maybe I'll like what I see and pay the $5 a month moving forward. That's the whole reason why they have a free trial and this type of programming, to allow people to sample the product in the hopes that some will stick around but knowing that most won't. So I don't feel like I'm taking advantage of the system. |
