I'm an awards show junkie, and at the risk of overgeneralizing, I often find that Tony winners give speeches that feel more genuine, literate, heartfelt and humorous. The Tony win often can represent a newcomer's first brush with fame or cap off a veteran's lifetime of achievements. (My pet peeve, as exemplified by last week's Emmys, are award winners, like Scott Frank, who bring up long laundry lists to recite and feel entitled to go on and on.)
One of my favorite Tony moments is still an emotional, 11-year-old Daisy Eagan winning for ''The Secret Garden'' and thanking her agent. |
