I really liked this exchange from the NYT roundtable, too:
Taffy Akner: I love the way people are speaking of their joy and then also their pain through the prism of that joy. I normally find awards advocacy tedious, but I’m very moved by all of it.
Jesse Green: This Tonys seems to be actually living out the diversity, equity and inclusion promises that may have seemed empty when uttered. And it’s doing so in a way that highlights entertainment instead of stifling it. Bravo.
Maya Phillips: I was worried about there being many superficially “woke” speeches but everyone does seem earnest and inspired by everything that’s happened in the past year and a half. It is, like Taffy said, really moving. |
