With any luck, it takes Best Musical as the cherry on the top, leading it to 10 Tony wins. And it absolutely can-can-can!
Two of my favorite speeches came from this show: choreographer Sonya Tayeh speaking out as ''a brown, queer Arab-American woman.''
And Aaron Tveit winning his Tony and getting choked up, thanking the folks who ''many years ago took a chance on me: Bernie Telsey, Jack O'Brien, Michael Greif, Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman, Tom Kitt, Brian Yorkey, the late Margo Lion, the late Terrence McNally, David Stone. We are so privileged to be on Broadway. [We must] continue to strive to represent the many and not the few, BY the many and not the few, FOR the many and not the few. Because what we do changes people's lives. It changes people's hearts. ... This [Tony] means more than I can ever say. Thank you very much!'' |
