| Oh, I understand the difference between racism and systemic racism, the former being judging a person or a class of people based on their race, which I agree with you can go in all directions. But the only context in which "I want to make the same amount of money as that white boy" could be construed as racist is if we were talking about systemic racism, because there is not a judgment against Tveit on his being white, but rather a judgment against the power and wealth that accrues to white people. And within the context of systemic racism, there is not yet enough equity for that racism to go in all directions. We also can't have any conversation about racism - in any form - without recognizing that systems of oppression are built upon current and historical traumas that are effectively addressed through the use of humor, such as in the phrase "I want to make the same amount of money as that white boy". This statement is not racist invective, it is a flippant clap back You might find the statement in poor taste, but it's a valid response to the devaluing of Black life in America. And you didn't dredge up that quote to call it out for poor taste, you dredged it up solely to call it racist. Now, you are right that I'm presuming you're White, and I appreciate the reminder not to make that assumption. That is valid, and I will take it to heart. Still, whether or not you are White, you are responding in a way that reflects White fragility, and so it is still recommended reading. In the meanwhile, maybe you should focus on explaining your own thoughts and actions rather than tearing down others. But also - honestly, what did you expect when you posted a comment like that on this site? We are not afraid to clap back when it is called for, and your post was rancid. I tried to be polite about it, but you went on a post spree of hurt feelings and bile, so here we are. |
