You might, but I don't know he'd be right... I didn't think the choice worked as well for Titus as I would have liked. Maybe if Alex Newell or Mykal Kilgore attempted the song it would have popped, but I felt Titus was struggling a bit on the high notes and seemed a bit uncomfortable.
I'd need to sit with this longer, and maybe see them rehearse more in depth to find the nuance of the story they were telling (and find some chemistry?), but I think there is a valid question as to whether this approach comes across as genuine or a variation of drag, as you put it (or in the way that Cameron Mackintosh was trying to put it in his comments a few weeks back). We're still wrapping our heads around how to un-binary gender in our theater, and I think we're going to have a lot of experimenting along the way to find the best practices. |
