| I couldn't agree more. I thought that was the point of ''Broadway's Back'': to celebrate the shows that are reopening and running NOW. The number that John Legend did with the cast of ''Ain't Too Proud'' was one of few real showcases of a current musical. The special also showed fleeting glimpses of curtain calls from reopened shows, but they weren't identified, so what good was that? If you're going to celebrate the past, be more selective. It would've been great if the Tonys closed with that terrific trio of iconic duets: Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel with ''For Good'' from ''Wicked''; Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp with ''What You Own'' from ''Rent,'' and Audra McDonald and Brian Stokes Mitchell with ''Wheels of a Dream'' from ''Ragtime.'' But I didn't need Tituss Burgess and Andrew Rannells doing ''It Takes Two'' from ''Into the Woods.'' Or Ben Platt and Anika Noni Rose doing ''Move On'' from ''Sunday in the Park With George.'' (Even more frustratingly, Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford were there; THEY should've sung this Sondheim duet from their ravishing revival!) |
