| Because ''A Soldier's Play'' won Best Revival of a Play, and its author is still alive, Charles Fuller, now 82, will receive his first Tony. His director, Kenny Leon, picked up the prize last night and addressed social justice, but I wish Fuller could've been there to accept in person. The celebrated African-American playwright received a 1982 Pulitzer Prize and the N.Y. Drama Critics Circle Award for ''A Soldier's Play.'' At the same time, David Alan Grier won Featured Actor in a Play last night for ''A Soldier's Play,'' and has his own history with the material. Grier was in the 1984 screen adaptation called ''A Soldier's Story,'' which earned Fuller an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. And just the other day, Grier, 65, announced that he'll star and executive produce a limited TV series of ''A Soldier's Play'' for Sony Pictures. Grier got his first Tony nomination in 1982 for ''The First,'' a musical about Jackie Robinson. His nomination for ''A Soldier's Play'' is his fourth. It's been nearly 40 years between his ''First'' Tony nomination and last night's win. Has any Tony-nominated actor waited longer and actually won? |
