Losing to The Inheritance shouldn't be such a surprise. The Inheritance arrived with devotees of the London premiere singing its praises and touting the cast, and the printed text (I had read it), and though its houses were not sellouts (I saw both halves in great seats purchased on TDF), the show garnered a following. It was a play that generated much emotion, and quickly became famous for its first part close, the tears it inspired a big topic on this board. It was that play that couldn't find a big audience that still maintained word of mouth. Its final Saturday both Hillary Clinton and Pete Butegieg attended. Slave Play was embraced by critics but divided many others.

I have two friends, both artists of color, who were not fans, to put it mildly. I went out with one after she attended a matinee, and she echoed what my other friend had said. Her response was quite negative. The presumption that it was universally adored or a Best Play didn't take into account the significant embrace of Inheritance, or the resistance of some to Slave Play's iconoclastic style and content.
