I think the story is extraordinary because now two actors have very publicly declared that they are leaving the show by citing its failings to serve trans and non-binary actors. I think this is the same story as Patten’s apology video, Schell’s tweet, and Gooding’s tweet.
For a show that is very self-satisfied at being Woke and bringing activism to Broadway, this is a particularly egregious example of the cultural toxicity that is often at work behind the scenes. It will be interesting to see how a show that made protest the key image of its Tony number will handle a protest when it is outside the theater protesting the show itself.
