| Saw this film yesterday and was prepared to hate it due to all the negative reviews I've read. Within the first five minutes I was hooked. Ben Platt was fantastic in a much toned down performance from his stage portrayal. I initially was on the "He's too old" bandwagon based on what I saw from the trailer, but the truth is he has a very boyish face and really did not appear too old on screen. He really did come across as an awkward 17 year old. There were some things that did not work as well as they did in the theater, in particular the show's humor. What was funny on stage was not really all that funny in the film version, which means the movie is a lot "heavier" than the play. There is something to be said for the reality of what we see on screen compared to the stage. It's hard to laugh at Connor singing Jared's made up lyrics in "Sincerely Me" knowing that the character just killed himself, and some of Evan's anxiety was funny on stage (his sweaty hands) but did not seem as funny in the film. Also, I am not sure if giving Heidi Hansen only one song makes that song more impactful, or lessens the impact of the mother's role entirely. But, all that being said, it is really hard for me to imagine a better film adaptation of this musical. I found it to be very powerful and moving. There were not a lot of people in the theater, but still, could hear lots of sniffling throughout, so others in the audience were clearly moved. Again, I was really surprised at how much I loved this movie. I'm looking forward to seeing it again. | |
