My understanding - please correct me! - has always been that the Wilder estate allowed the Jones &Schmidt Our Town musical, and the Kander and Ebb Skin of Our Teeth Musical, to be written/ But then never gave permission for a first class (Broadway/West End) production. I saw the Grovers Corners premiere in Chicago in 1987 - and the reviews were on the money - the show wasn't quite good enough. In many underlying rights agreements, this is one of the stages where the rights hodlers of the play can say sorry,
but no thanks. And at some point after 1987, they said just that. |
