When I went to see Dear Evan Hansen at Second Stage, I didn't expect to see a docu-drama about teen suicide. I knew it was a story about troubled teens that relied on a contrivance that strained credibility. I accepted this because Ben Platt's performance was so overwhelmingly emotional (for me anyway). I was genuinely moved by what I saw on stage and revisited it twice more on Broadway.
I think the filmmakers have done a creditable job of making a movie out of this story. I thought it was well done, and the performances were uniformly strong. Probably not a great film or musical, but one that is worth seeing. |
