| Even with a fourth hour of airtime, Sunday's Tony Awards gave short shrift to the Best Play nominees (as usual). Andrew Garfield and Robin de Jesus the presenters for Best Play, rattled off brief synopses of each nominee, and that was it. I wish one or two of the duets (like ''It Takes Two'') could've been cut, so there was time for a montage or featurette about the nominated plays. As it happened, the Paramount portion actually wrapped up 10 minutes early (thanks, probably, to the various no-show winners from ''A Christmas Carol''). Too bad there wasn't a pretaped package about the plays that could've been added to the broadcast, especially when it looked like the telecast would wind up so much sooner. So is there a best or better way to showcase the nominated plays? A recent Tony telecast (I think) featured the playwrights talking about their own works. At the 2008 Tonys, Whoopi Goldberg hosted a 5-minute segment on the Best Play nominees that was intercut with snippets from those shows. And at the 1990 Tonys, each nominated play did a roughly 4-minute scene, & I still recall Maggie Smith in the riotous one from ''Lettice and Lovage.'' I imagine Tony telecasts assume any time spent on the plays means the home audience automatically changes channels. But if theater lovers are signing up for Paramount Plus specifically for the Tonys, wouldn't they be likelier to stay and watch? |
