Yes, that strikes me as an odd choice--surely Trump would have nothing but disdain for its message of tolerance. Granted, there is much to criticize about the script, especially from the perspective of these days (i.e. the tropes of Bloody Mary and Liat can be heard to take--I was listening to Sirius today in the car and "Happy Talk" came on. Love Juanita Hall and she made Mary a real person, as did Logan and Hammerstein, within the limits of time it was written--I've never read the Michener--but the song makes me cringe not so much with its pidgin English--I know enough linguistics to understand how and why pidgins emerge nd what linguistic dexterity it takes to communicate in one--but the simple-minded "happy" native perspective was always off-putting to me, even when I saw the film when it was rereleased when I was in 3rd grade--and yes, I know, it is the irony of what is to come that the song plays with it, but still...)
I'll stop now. |
