| I love her and I love her singing and acting (and I think they should have kept her singing voice for the film of SP) on the OBC. It's not her that makes me cringe, not at all. It's the "happy native" stereotype of the song. But I think Ms. Hall was a superb performer. I wish they had filmed "House of Flowers"--even though Pearl Bailey dominates the proceedings, the songs Hall gets show her versatility and talent. I know her film and stage career was filled with what now feels problematic (yellow face in both SP and FDS--and I know she was a replacement for the original choice of Anna May Wong in the latter film), but I love her in everything she did. She did the best (which was very fine indeed) with the limited opportunities available to her during that period. |
