Big Hike in TDF Broadway Ticket Prices
Posted by: GabbyGerard 12:34 pm EDT 09/29/21

Post-pandemic, it seems like Broadway shows are consistently going for $57 on TDF rather than $45. That's a roughly 20% increase! I know that both the theatre and non-profit industries were hit hard by the pandemic, but as someone who needs TDF because I work in BOTH of those sectors...ouch!

And, yes, I expect there will be a slew of "If you don't like the prices, don't pay" responses to this post...

What were the pre-pandemic prices?

It sounds like TDF is now $57 for a Broadway musical and $49 for a Broadway play. What were the prices before the pandemic?

And how exactly is that money allocated? Does the entire $57 go to the production, or is part of it kept by TDF? Or does TDF only get money from the fees?

Fall 2019 prices

In Fall 2019, Broadway musicals were $49.50 + $4 fee (that's what we paid for "Oklahoma!") and plays were $43.00 + $4 fee (that's what we paid for each part of "The Inheritance"). Part of what's surprising about the price hike is that musicals have gone up slightly more than plays have gone up.

Singapore/Fling, thanks -- so there's been about a 15% increase in price. That's quite a bit.

I, too, was put off by the price increase on TDF. A Broadway play (non-musical) now runs $49 on TDF plus fees. I can see the same show with a discount code for $49 without fees if I take the print out to the box office … and I can negotiate where I’ll be sitting, which I can’t do with TDF. TDF is more useful for off-Broadway productions, but right now, I’m not sure it’s worth renewing my membership.

So far, we aren't planning on renewing our TDF membership because of these price changes. Maybe that will change, I don't know, but these new prices are more than we're willing to pay.

I, for one, don't think you should be taken to task for mentioning this. While I don't think anyone believes the TDF prices should stay constant permanently over the years as full price tickets increase and the cost of doing business increases, it's unfortunate that this increase is happening now when ticket prices have not, at a baseline, increased recently. And when, presumably, many of the arts profressionals who make use of the service have been out of work, continued working with a salary reduction, or moved to other temporary jobs where they may be making less than before. I'm not sure if TDF uses a supply and demand model. Is it possible the prices would decrease if not enough people are buying at the higher prices? We shall see.

Thanks tons for letting me know - yes, rush often has such terrific seats, too....more often than not I hauled down at dawn if necessary, pre-pandemic, for those; did get some treasures via TDF, & hope they can thrive enough to lower prices again at some point. TDF helps greatly to ease the cost of off & off-off Broadway ticket prices.
