In the Variety interview, Lopez explains why he prefers the term of ''Latine'' over ''Latinx'':

''Latinx is not a Spanish word. It doesn’t work in Spanish. It’s not pronounceable in Spanish. It’s pronounceable in anglicized Spanish. I fully support and believe in the necessity of allowing Spanish to adapt to a gender neutral usage. That is the right thing to do, and I’m very happy that it is in the conversation now. I support that fully, but I also support an evolution of the language that works with the language, and Latiné is a Spanish word.''

This is really helpful to me. About two years ago I posted under a Vulture/NY Magazine review and used Latinx. I was raked over the proverbial coals by subsequent posters who told me I had no business using a word that the community it supposedly reflects often rejects, for the very reasons Lopez gently and patiently explains. I opted never to use it. I am happy to learn that Latine is a preferred alternative.
