Many hugs for Ben Platt

When I saw dear Evan Hansen a number of years ago with Ben. I heard many people crying along with me understanding why he did what he did and how in the end it really helped all of them . I saw it again with his age appropriate successor and I felt nothing .
I went to the movie with trepidation because of the reviews but I could not disagree with them more . Not casting Ben Platt in this movie would have been absurd as the time that 25 year old Barbra Streisand played Dolly a instead of the magnificent Carol Channing so talk about age appropriateness there . He is an actor and I certainly believe him as a character and ask for his hair usually I am taken aback when I see female stars wearing wigs and it seem to me that he was not wearing a wig. I would love to meet him and give him a big hug for making me cry again. Also what a wonderful score and Amy Adams and Juliane MOORE on top of it.

As for the third string critic of the Times who cringed at the film, you are not only a bad critic but a heartless person. This film besides bein entertaining deals withe loneliness and depression of youth and the damage the internet plays in all this. The film should be a must for teens.

So Ben Platt thanks and many hugs.

Saw the film Friday night in a Boston Suburb; 4 of us in the theater that seats 200. But there were no other customers in the theater for any shows, so this particular movie house isn't seeing many customers return!
I took my niece, 19 year old theater major...she loved it and thought it is a must for teens as you said, huskyital. As someone who works with teens, I say anything out there that saves one life works for me.
We did have a chuckle not about Ben Platt not looking his character's age, but the whole gym filled at the rally with no one looking like they went to high school!

''Have you ever felt like nobody was there?''

My screening was nearly as empty last weekend when I went to see ''Dear Evan Hansen.''

I've seen the show (Broadway and tour) a total of 5 times, twice with Platt. I was equally impacted emotionally even with the other Evans. The last one I saw was Zachary Noah Piser (the Evan alternate), and he was VERY good. I think it was partly because he read so young on stage (not sure how old he actually is) which made him a much more sympathetic Evan. He did not have all the twitches and mannerisms of Platt's Evan which made him seem like a more normal kid, and you could really understand how someone so youthful and awkward might make the kinds of mistakes that Evan makes in the show. I am looking forward to seeing it again when I return to NY or when the tour come by.

Noah Galvin?

Is that the replacement Evan you are referring to? I actually liked Noah a lot and I saw Ben also. Not only does he look like a high schooler, I felt he could hit the high notes with ease. I may be super minority, but I always feel Ben is straining to hit those notes and wish they wrote the songs a little lower for him—I felt that also in the movie. As for the movie, I think it is a good adaptation but not exceptional.

I guess so. I have sung professionally but I wish I had Ben’s voice. I find it to be a thrilling instrument and I don’t think he pushes but each to his own. No the movie is not exceptional. It is not west side story or my fair lady or even guys and dolls but I think what it says is very important for our time.

Saw Ben at Second Stage, then again on Broadway. Later in the run saw Noah Galvin. Loved what Platt did both on and off-Broadway and thought he delivered a shattering performance. I thought Galvin was nearly his equal in every way, and the overall production was even more affecting-- mainly because Galvin seemed so small and young, and this changed my perception of the parents. With Galvin, I felt all three parents depicted were trying hard to save this vulnerable, wounded teen. With Platt, I felt like Connor's parents were being manipulated, and Evan's mom was loving, stressed and struggling. Found it very moving either way, and felt Platt's award was deserved. But I think Galvin has been underappreciated in a really wonderful performance.

It's those odd contortions he does whenever he sings the word "waiting" (in that song about doing that that the window) etc that always has made me think he's pushing. He looks damned uncomfortable, whether it's healthy singing or not.

It is interesting how so many movie reviewers mentioned some variation of "How can we feel for someone that takes advantage of such a huge lie?" Such a different reaction than the theater reviews.

People who find the material cringey aren't "heartless". You're completely welcome to your opinion, though.

Nor are we haters. The story seems to inspire less willingness to suspend disbelief under the scrutiny of the camera. And it’s not just one Times critic noting the strain to invest. The range of responses represents quite a cross section of critics.
