I guess so. I have sung professionally but I wish I had Ben’s voice. I find it to be a thrilling instrument and I don’t think he pushes but each to his own. No the movie is not exceptional. It is not west side story or my fair lady or even guys and dolls but I think what it says is very important for our time.

Saw Ben at Second Stage, then again on Broadway. Later in the run saw Noah Galvin. Loved what Platt did both on and off-Broadway and thought he delivered a shattering performance. I thought Galvin was nearly his equal in every way, and the overall production was even more affecting-- mainly because Galvin seemed so small and young, and this changed my perception of the parents. With Galvin, I felt all three parents depicted were trying hard to save this vulnerable, wounded teen. With Platt, I felt like Connor's parents were being manipulated, and Evan's mom was loving, stressed and struggling. Found it very moving either way, and felt Platt's award was deserved. But I think Galvin has been underappreciated in a really wonderful performance.

It's those odd contortions he does whenever he sings the word "waiting" (in that song about doing that that the window) etc that always has made me think he's pushing. He looks damned uncomfortable, whether it's healthy singing or not.
