| Irrespective of its merits, this is a play that Broadway should welcome enthusiastically, for its almost exclusively black cast, its primarily black production staff, and the unusually diverse audience it has bee attracting. Norm Lewis and Michael Urie were the only names I recognized, but the entire cast thrives on this material. Unless you have a low tolerance for situation comedy, you should find something to enjoy here. I don't remember the last time I was in an audience that laughed so hard. | |

| I couldn’t disagree with you more. When I attended recently Hades town which includes the wonderful Andre D. And other black actors but I did not notice one African American audience member. Nowadays when we hear the word diversity it just means equal representation of African-Americans with other cultures. Well both the Asian community and Hispanic community has a higher percentage of Americans and they are never included in this diversity. Unless Denzel Washington is in a play African-Americans stay away and it is a shame that the wonderful successful black actors like Audra McDonald do absolutely nothing to expand the audience diversity. In terms of theater I think the white race learns more about the black race by attending their plays than the black race learns anything about the white race because they don’t attend plays whether written by white people or Asian people or black people. If you think this play is good you should go see it because you want to have a good time not because there are all black people involved in the production. This year as far as I know the only seven dramatic plays deal with African-American culture and they are just 12% of the population. True equality in the United States will never exist until diversity in its true nature exists both on the stage and in business as well as in the audience. | |

| I forgot to say in my other post that BIPOC in this country have to learn White culture simply to survive. To some extent, White queer people understand this phenomenon through how we have to learn straight cis culture, but in general, White folks haven’t had to learn other cultures in order to function in this White world. | So much to unpack there, but here’s an easy place to start: in our White-dominant culture, Black people and other POC don’t have to seek out stories about White people to learn about White culture because they are literally surrounded by it every day everywhere they look. As for Black audience members, maybe your performance of Hadestown didn’t have any Back folk in the crowd, but over at Pass Over - you know, a show by and about Black people - the audience was noticeably diverse (there were even some Asians!), and Denzel was nowhere to be seen. |
