| The musical improved since its premiere at La Jolla Playhouse, but it's still a disaster. | |

| The piece is behind a paywall so I can't read it but could someone convey how he thinks this is "a bad sign for Broadway"? | |

| Here’s the last portion of the review, ryhog. “Diana” clarified for me why some people not only hate musicals but also loathe those who unabashedly do. The show, which was supposed to have opened last year but was forced to close in previews because of the COVID-19 pandemic, has been generically devised to draw in the tourist hordes. (Ashley, who seems never to have met a Broadway-bound musical he didn’t want to shepherd, had better luck with his recent live-capture of “Come From Away,” a show with infinitely more heart.) Artistically, “Diana” is soulless. The raison d'être seems to be to make money. The streaming of a filmed performance before the production even opens on Broadway is an unusual marketing strategy that perhaps intends to get ahead of what will likely be punishing reviews. Let’s hope the tactic fails — not out of any malice but out of the hope that producers won’t be rewarded for shamelessly sticking with schlock. During the long pandemic pause, Broadway has been forced to confront not only its dismal record on race but also its checkered history on the rights and dignity of its workers. Cluttering the space with commercial mediocrity sadly suggests a return to business as usual. For this reason, “Diana” isn’t just bad but dangerous. The musical deserves to disappear in the detritus of Netflix.” Laura |

| Thank you for taking the time to post the excerpt. McNulty seems to be extrapolating here in an unsound way, but of course the schlock label applies as does the shameless sticking with it. But I would not say that the space is "cluttered" with such shows. Whether or not it fails as miserably as it should, Broadway has weathered plenty of make-a-buck garbage despite omens like this review's. To paraphrase, the space is wide enough for both garbage and jewels. | |

| I just finished watching it, and was howling with laughter throughout it. I’ve seen my share of turkeys, and this one is a jumbo prize for your Thanksgiving table. It may be the worst musical I’ve ever seen. It’s certainly the most misguided. Laura |

| Well, it is a sympathetic portrait. I guess, to the extent that anyone comes off well in it, she does. | |

| Spot on. Gratitude for recognizing the subtle work of the resourceful Davie, who almost makes Parker-Bowles a slowly emerging Elphaba: an ostensible villain far more compelling than the deer-forever-in-the-headlights Diana. Davie is structurally positioned as the obstacle in the love story -- wait, is it ever a love story? -- but even the libretto acknowledges her earned rooting value when the Queen finally compliments Camilla's patience. A musical that ends up giving Diana's nemesis the better material (resulting in the best performance) arrives bearing its fundamental flaw: a heroine unworthy of our time. | |

| "My particular favourite is the moment when Diana looks into a crib and tenderly sings: “Harry, my ginger-haired son / You’ll always be second to none.” But others might prefer the part when the Queen belts out a song about Prince Charles’s inability to keep it in his pants, or the song that appears to be called A Thriller in Manilla with Camilla." | |

| We gave up after 30 minutes--the most unforgivable part was how boring it was--boring melodic lines, poorly written lyrics with badly constructed rhymes, and monotonous 80s MTV choreography. I'm sure there was much talent among the performers (I have seen Judy Kaye before and she does what she can here), but it just wasn't worth sitting through. | |

| The scene/song called "Secrets and Lies" where Diana meets with some AIDS patients is actually quite good. | |
